We highly recommend Dave Canning of Canning Construction as a general contractor for a custom home building project. We worked with Dave over an extended period while we built our 4000 square foot house in Palo Alto. The project was complex, as we explored and used relatively new building materials for heating ad insulation; installed a custom electrical control system with a relatively unknown vendor; and designed and installed a number of completely custom finish elements. Dave was excellent at communicating with us, the clients, and worked extremely well with sub-contractors, including the ones that we found whom he had not worked with before. He is also superlative at creative and collaborative problem solving, a skill that our project exercised to an unusual degree and that requires working well with the interior designer and architect. He is steady, responsible, responsive, and thorough, following through on punch lists and that last hard 10-percent of work that always feels like 90-percent.

Dave Canning led the effort, performing some of the construction tasks himself with his crew and also managing a host of subcontractors. We recently completed an extensive remodel of our 30 year old Los Altos Hills home. Steve and Dave Canning had done some initial remodeling when we purchased the home in 1987. Steve later remodeled the office in 2007. We decided to completely remodel our home in 2012 because of the confidence we had in Steve. He redid the kitchen and baths, reconfigured some rooms, replaced most windows and doors (exterior and interior), added new hardwood floors, and upgraded the HVAC and lighting systems.
